Canadian pedorthists visit Europe

The Pedorthic Association of Canada (PAC) organized its first study tour to Europe for its’ members in conjunction with the OST Messe in Cologne. Prior to visiting Cologne, the group spent time in The Netherlands on a tour organized with the support of the NVOS, PAC’s sister association in The Netherlands.

In The Netherlands, the group of Canadian pedorthists made several stops at local clinics, labs, Fontys University, De Hoogstraat rehabilitation centre and Ottobock Jos America. Each stop on the busy two day tour had its own highlights and had the Canadians taking pictures and jotting notes. These visits will certainly lead to innovation in Canada. It is also hoped that a partnership will be formed with Fontys to see Dutch students complete their practicum placement in Canada as soon as 2018.

The visit also included cycling in Amsterdam and a canal lunch cruise. One of the highlights was the opportunity to meet local pedorthists and to learn from them. A dinner with some local NVOS members was organized where new friendships were formed.

Upon arrival in Cologne, the group visited Renia’s factory and was able to learn about the history of the company and more about its products. Some members of the group also took time to visit Rahm’s Cologne-area facility.

Throughout the OST Messe, the Canadian pedorthists were introduced to new products that they hope to integrate into their practices back home. For three Canadians, the highlight of the OST Messe was their opportunity to present their work to an international audience.

Everyone returned to Canada with many new ideas to enhance their practice, new products they wish to recommend to their patients and new friendships. The Pedorthic Association of Canada looks forward to welcoming all of our new friends to Canada for IVO 2018 in April. www.ivo2018.com
