A new exhibition at the Schoenenkwartier museum in Waalwijk, Netherlands, brings together the craft and the future of orthopedic shoemaking. A display case shows orthopedic shoes that illustrate how this profession is developing.

Visitors gain insight into the traditional manufacturing process and a modern, data-driven method of fitting. The transition from craftsmanship to technology is illustrated by informative films and two objects from the SmartScan project by Fontys University of Applied Sciences.

Fontys Paramedical provides education and conducts extensive research into orthopedic shoes and foot health. One of the most important projects is SmartScan, led by associate lecturer Fred Holtkamp. Fourteen national and international partners collaborated on this project, together with 48 experts, teachers, and 72 students from 13 study programs. It was made possible by the Regieorgaan SIA. Fred Holtkamp and teacher-researcher Geert-Jos van der Maazen (Fontys Paramedisch) have been working together for years on this research, which won the second prize of the RAAK award in 2023.

The SmartScan project has two objectives: to develop, the SmartGlove, and to improve insight into the design, measurement, and delivery process of orthopedic aids.

The SmartGlove is used in the first phase of making a custom shoe. This technology makes the entire process—from measurement to production—largely digital. What makes the SmartGlove unique is that not only the shape of the foot, but also the pressure and actions of the orthopedic technician can be digitally recorded. This information ensures a more accurate and efficient design process. The first operational version of the SmartGlove is expected in the spring of 2026.
